PE Pipe Welding Operations.

Ching Contracting Ltd have been undertaking butt fusion and electrofusion welding of polyethylene pipes and fittings for well over 10 years.
In the last 5 years we have significantly expanded our PE welding capabilities with the purchase of three Hurner, full CNC, butt welding machines and two Hurner electrofusion welding units.

We have 10 staff who hold current butt fusion and electrofusion welding qualifications (Unit Standards 10980 and 10987).

Butt Fusion and Electrofusion unit standards are currently required to be renewed or refreshed every 2 years. More importantly all of our qualified welders undertake PE welding on a regular basis ensuring that our welding procedures and processes are 'fresh in their minds'

The butt welding machines we currently have are two Hurner CNC315 ECO units capable of butt welding all standard PE pipe diameters from 90mm to 315mm inclusive and one Hurner CNC500 ECO machine capable of welding pipe diameters from 500mm to 200mm inclusive. We are also able to source hire machines to undertake welding of larger diameter pipes if required.

With all three of our Hurner butt welding machines being full CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) we are able to produce the highest possible quality of butt weld with all of the critical welding parameters (pressures, temperatures and timing) being automatically controlled by the computer controlled electrical/hydraulic head unit. This automation allows the operator to focus on the welding environment and weld preparation which will ensure the highest quality of weld is produced. All individual weld information is logged, in detail, by the welding machine for subsequent download and reporting that can be provided to the engineer and/or client on request.

Over the last 5 years we have welded tens of kilometres of polyethylene pipelines for various clients throughout the top of the south island including :

 - Solid Energy NZ - Ford Creek No.4 to Water Treatment Plant DN315 Pipeline.
 - Solid Energy NZ - Duncans Sump to Water Treatment Plant twin DN400 Pipelines.
 - Tasman District Council - Takaka Sewer Rising Main Upgrades.
 - Tasman District Council - Lodder Lane Sewer Rising Main Upgrade.
 - Nelson City Council - Saltwater Creek Sewer DN355 Rising Main Upgrade.
 - Solid Energy NZ - A-Drive and Upper A-Drive Pipelines.
 - Solid Energy NZ - CHPP Pipelines (DN400 to DN250).
 - Solid Energy NZ - Fire Suppression Pipelines (DN450 and DN400).
 - Solid Energy NZ - CHPP Flocculant, Slurry and Return Water Pipelines (DN400 to DN250).
 - Solid Energy NZ - Fire Fighting Pipelines.

In addition to our butt welding machines we also have two Hurner electrofusion welding units for installation of electrofusion fittings such as EF couplers, saddles, bends etc.
Each of our butt wlding machines has been set up with a portable, purpose built, welding shed/enclosure to enable to provide an optimal welding environment (clean, dry, sheltered) when welding long continuous pipe strings. We also own our own generators to supply power to each of the welders if mains power is not available on site.
